Infinitives

An infinitive is a verb form that includes to + the base form of a verb. Negative infinitives follow the pattern: not + to + base form.

• Look for infinitives and negative infinitives:

       after verbs

       after verb + object

       after be + adjective

       at the beginning of a sentence

       after in order

       in the structure It subject . . . + infinitive

Gerunds

A gerund is an -ing form of a verb that we use in place of a noun. Negative gerunds follow the pattern: not + verb + -ing.

• Look for gerunds:

       in subject position (at or near the
       beginning of a sentence or clause)

       in object position (after a verb)

       after a preposition

Present Perfect Passive

has/have (not) + been + past participle

Future Passive with Will/Be Going To

will (not) + be + past participle am/is/are (not) going to + be + past participle

The Present Passive

am/is/are + past participle
am/is/are + being + past participle

The Past Passive

was/were + past participle
was/were + being + past participle
